I am doing a history project on Nigeria before independence, and I have done everything but I dont know whether imperialism/conlonization has made a positive or negative effect on Nigeria. Can someone help me? Thank You
Answer:Depending on the depth of your research, you should pay attention to precolonial arts & culture - the Nok Sculptures/traditions, bronze sculpting in Benin, cloth manufacture and fabric printing; technology - road constructions in the mid-west by the 16/17th century; government - solid and structured political heirarchies in the west and north, plus a true Roman/Greek-style democracy in the east. Post-colonialization has generally been characterized along the same lines: arts & culture - still existing & developing into newer forms esp. in the areas of dance and ceremonial celebrations; technology - links to a wider reach of people with both positives (internet/telecommunications) & negatives (proliferating corruption); government - continuously acrimonous and characterized by tribal affiliations rather than merit structures (although this trend is changing gradually) with an emphasis on the need for federalism within a holistic democracy and republican government [don't forget the slave trade here]. Has imperialism been generally positive? Invariably, yes...in some areas. Opening up the country to the comity of nations is probably the greatest positive. The marketing of oil and gas and Nigeria's constantly exalted role in regional affairs are prime examples. The impact of the slave trade, balkanization of the oil-producing regions and a legacy of dysfunction in the political and economic system are singular negatives. I would argue that colonialism should have opened up the country to the world; should have continued until a stable system was inculcated whereby a multititude of nations was incorporated into a single nation state; and, should have remained committed to keeping the country founded by its activities in a position to truly appreciate the concept of a global socio-political and economic structure.
How did the colonists treat the native inhabitants in nigeria?
Answer:Indirect rule. The British didn't want contact with the natives so they used existing "chiefs" to rule them. If the people were traditionally democratic and didn't have chiefs the British appointed chiefs for them. After all, if you didn't have an aristocracy you couldn't be civilized. They still have these artificial colonial chiefs in Nigeria. Also they made them all live in one country even if they didn't like each other. They still don't like each other much. They had a really nasty civil war back in the late 1960s.
Hi, Just wondering, if Nigeria were to have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, WHOSE interest would they represent? Besides their own country, whose ideas and beliefs would they represent? Thanks!
Answer:If Nigeria were given a permanent seat it would be giving a voice to a country that harbors terrorists and crooks. I think they would go easy on any country that did the same.

Only the corrupt government and the oil producers of nigeria are profiting, correct? What does that have to do with the instability? Also, do you have any sites that can give me more infor on this topic?
Answer:It's a very common story in Africa and the mid east. It's about sacrificing long term prosperity for short term gains. Enriching the few at the expense of the many. Lets take Iraq for example (early Hussein years). You would think with such an abundant natural resource it would be a wealth country correct? But it is not. Because instead of the Iraqi government mining it's oil through Iraqi companies, selling it on the global market place, and using the revenue to invest in infrastructure, education, and social services, Hussein chose to, or was ordered to contract the mining of their oil to American companies. They buy the rights to the land and the oil at a fraction of what the all the oil is actually worth. They employ Iraqis but pay them slave wages. And instead of returning the income to the community from which it came, the profits are shipped back to US, meaning we everyday Americans enjoy the oil and our companies enjoy the profits. And what does Iraq get? Well Hussein gets to keep the money he made from auctioning off his oil fields, and since he's the only one in the country making money off the resources, he gets to remain his power. Short term goals are satisfied. Similar kinds of thing have been going on in Africa for decades. In nigeria's case it's more than just oil but gemstones, rubber, and precious metals. All of which are owned by American companies so the true value of those resources are never utilized by the country from which it came. Corrupt governments make deals with foreign industries, taking a lump sum of cash in exchange for the long term wealth underneath the ground. Sorry I don't know of any websites but you can search for articles on neo-imperialism in Africa and the mid east. It should help
