Can anyone help me answer this question about Laos? I need to write a paper and this is some of the information I need. I tried to google it but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks to anyone who can help. Please provide a link.
Answer:This is very easy: France, until 1949. It's a sad state of affairs. It is a tightly-controlled absolute communist government. They have elections, but each person running for office must be approved first by the ruling Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. In the 1990s, some attempts were made to reach out economically to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Laos was even admitted to the Association of South East Asian Nations, and the US relaxed their aid embargo (following the 1975 Communist revolution). Unfortunately, these mild economic reforms were offset in 1997 during the Asian financial crisis, which destroyed the value of the Laotian kip. Today it's a country of almost medieval means, with little input or export - of any kind - from the outside world.
What is the best way to travel from thailand to laos and Vietnam? is there a train and is it easy. how long does it take to these countries and how much is it all?
Answer:To go from Thailand to Vietnam I would definitely say fly unless you like long uncomfortable bus rides. To go to Laos you have several options. You can fly from Bangkok to Vientiane. You can take a bus, train or plane to Udon Thani/Nong Khai then cross over to Laos at Nong Khai and get a taxi into Vientiane. You can take a train, bus or plane to Ubon Ratchathani. From there you have several options. You can take a bus to Mukdahan, Thailand then take a bus across Freedom Bridge 2 into Savanakhet, Laos. Also from Ubon you can take an international bus to Pakse, Laos which stops at Chong Mek and the Laos Immigration and you can get a visa on entry. You can also get a visa on entry when crossing over in Mukdahan. Up north if you are taking a bus from Udon Thani to Vietiane you must already have your Lao visa, if in Nong Khai you can pay a service 2000TB and they will take you to the border, do all the paperwork for your visa and a van will pick you up on the other side to take you to accommodations in Vientiane. Hope this helps.
I am planning to visit Hanoi again, and I am considering going to Laos. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? If so, is a bus travel possible? How much and how long will the travel take? Thanks.
Answer:Yes it is possible as I did it a few years ago. Prices will have changed by then but they run over night and the border crossing is fine but pretty filthy (actually the worst toilet I have ever seen in my ten years of backpacking, it was 10cm deep in excrement =)
Is it okay hitchhiking to Thailand from Russia across China and Laos or Birma this summer. How about transit visa and so on. Any ideas?
Answer:To me it sounds like a pretty stupid thing to do. There is some lawless areas in China, Laos and Burma. Also if your from a country that is visa exemt and you don't have a visa when you enter Thailand your only going to get 15 days visa exempt not 30.
Going to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand for my honeymoon in May (6th-23rd) and will be doing a mix of nature: halong bay/mekong, city sights : Hoi an, Ho Chi Min City and teples: Angkor Wat. I would like to be stylish and comfortable, and definitely do not want to offend anyone (by wearing inappropriate clothes in temples, etc) . Any suggestions on appropriate outfits? Thanks!
Answer:May is at the end of the hot season and the beginning of the rainy season in Thailand, Laos, and southern Vietnam. The weather in Halong Bay (in northern Vietnam) will be like spring in south/central USA, while HCMC will be hot and steamy (high humidity). I suggest you wear light garments made of cotton. T-shirts or polo shirts and shorts will do most places, especially if you make sure your shorts go down to your knees . Some temple visits may require that you wear socks & shoes and visiting the Grand Temple in Bangkok requires wearing full-length trousers.
